“In the past, paying gas bills, scheduling pipeline inspections, and arranging emergency repairs all required professional technicians to come to your home. Now, you can handle gas purchases, check account information, and even trigger an alarm—all with just a single tap on your smartphone,” said Aunt Zhang, who was browsing smart kitchen appliances at the Beijing Gas Lifestyle Experience Center recently.
Gas and other types of pipeline networks are the “inner workings” of a city—how well they function, how easy they are to use, and how reliable they are directly affect the safety of every resident’s life and property. The widespread adoption of digital technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things has added an extra “safety valve” to gas utilization.
5G for gas Utilize Install a “safety valve”
In recent years, gas-related accidents have occurred from time to time, causing serious casualties and property losses. It is particularly crucial to strengthen gas safety management, prevent and reduce accidents, and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.
Recently, the media outreach event “Digital Intelligence Leading China” visited Beijing Gas Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Beijing Gas”). In the smart kitchen area of the Beijing Gas Lifestyle Experience Hall, reporters noticed a switch on the cooktop. “Unlike traditional gas valves that are typically installed inside cabinets, this valve is mounted directly on the cooktop,” explained a staff member at the experience hall. “After residents finish cooking, they no longer need to awkwardly ‘crawl’ into the cabinet to check—instead, they can simply turn the valve off right there on the cooktop. Moreover, by tapping a button on their smartphone, they can remotely shut off the gas stove, effectively preventing gas-related safety incidents.” The staff member demonstrated this feature as they spoke.
To enhance urban gas safety levels, China Telecom has teamed up with several gas companies to launch a pilot project in the field of 5G+ gas safety. Beijing Gas has built an IoT cloud platform based on PaaS cloud services on China Telecom’s “Tianyi Cloud,” providing foundational technological support for intelligent applications in areas such as gas metering and sales management, as well as the management of gas pipeline networks and plant/facility infrastructure.
“In the past, pipeline inspections and emergency repairs both required specialized personnel to visit customers’ homes, which often led to delays in emergency response and low operational efficiency. With the completion and implementation of the IoT platform developed in collaboration with China Telecom, every stage of gas operations has become increasingly intelligent. As a result, the gas company can now identify problems promptly and address them for customers in a timely manner, making gas services smarter and gas usage safer,” said Huang Jian’an, Deputy Manager of the Sales and Service Department at Beijing Gas Group.
It is understood that Beijing Gas has installed smart combustible gas detectors in areas with a risk of gas leaks. These detectors transmit data via communication technologies such as 5G and NB-IoT to a cloud-based gas monitoring platform, where big data analysis and assessment are conducted. The cloud platform provides 24/7 online monitoring of gas leak data and can promptly deliver early warning information to users via SMS, phone calls, and other channels, enabling users to respond swiftly and provide timely feedback on the locations flagged for gas leaks, thus achieving comprehensive, real-time monitoring. Moreover, leveraging the 5G network, the gas company can also explore new applications in areas such as gas pipeline inspections, station management, and coordinated emergency response.
Residents bid farewell to the era of “door-to-door meter reading.”
It’s inconvenient to go to the bank with your card to purchase gas, and after upgrading to an NFC card, users have been experiencing frequent failures when trying to buy gas... Before the IoT platform was established, the traditional gas-purchasing process has long been criticized by ordinary citizens. “With a smart ‘brain’-powered gas system, the most immediate benefit is that it can provide users with a much better experience,” said a staff member at the Beijing Gas Lifestyle Experience Center.
It is understood that Beijing Gas has leveraged Tianyi Cloud, the Tianyi IoT platform, dedicated telecom lines, and IoT SIM card technology to provide foundational technical support for intelligent transformation in business areas such as gas metering and sales management, as well as the management of gas pipeline networks and plant/facility infrastructure. By transitioning to an IoT platform and replacing traditional meters with IoT-enabled meters, Beijing Gas has introduced the concept of accounts, enabling automatic billing and deduction between meters and the system. Users can conveniently handle online payments and report repairs via mobile apps, mini-programs, and other digital platforms, fundamentally resolving payment-related hassles and greatly enhancing the convenience of daily life for the public.
As of now, Beijing Gas has integrated over 900,000 smart gas meters and smart valve pits in Beijing into its smart management system. Huang Jian'an explained that currently, the group has thousands of employees working daily throughout the capital city, installing and replacing smart gas meters for residents. By the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Beijing will have installed 7 million smart gas meters, enabling residents to truly bid farewell to the era of “door-to-door meter reading.”
