In March of this year, GaoDe Infrared issued an announcement stating that the company had signed a project cooperation agreement with the Management Committee of Wuhan East Lake New Technology Development Zone. Under this agreement, its subsidiary, GaoDe Guangchuang, will serve as the project developer and invest approximately 1.32 billion yuan in the Wuhan East Lake Comprehensive Bonded Zone to build a high-end equipment intelligent manufacturing base.
In recent years, China’s manufacturing sector has made significant progress. However, most manufacturing enterprises still operate at a relatively low level of development and face resource and environmental constraints—including limitations on labor, land, and technology—leading to continuously rising comprehensive costs.
Faced with bottlenecks in the development of manufacturing, China has successively issued a series of policies, including the “14th Five-Year Plan for Digital Economy Development,” the “14th Five-Year Plan for Deep Integration of Informatization and Industrialization,” and the “14th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Manufacturing Development,” to strategically guide and promote the transformation of manufacturing toward intelligent manufacturing at the national level.
As the core of the new round of technological revolution, intelligent manufacturing can significantly enhance manufacturing efficiency, improve product quality, reduce product costs and resource consumption, and has become a major trend and central component of the future development of manufacturing. In May 2015, the State Council issued “Made in China 2025,” which explicitly identified intelligent manufacturing as the primary focus for the future development of China’s manufacturing sector.
Smart manufacturing is inseparable from sensors.
Information collection is the foundation of intelligent manufacturing, and sensors are a crucial means of gathering manufacturing data. Without sensors, artificial intelligence would be “like trying to cook without rice,” and intelligent manufacturing would become nothing more than a castle in the air.
In the industrial sector, sensors are often referred to as “industrial crafts” or “electrical sense organs.” This is because, as detection devices, sensors can perceive information about the quantity being measured and convert this perceived information into electrical signals or other desired forms of output according to specific rules, thereby meeting the requirements for information transmission, processing, storage, display, recording, and control.
Simply put, the emergence of sensors has endowed objects with sensory capabilities such as touch, taste, and smell, gradually bringing them to life. In automated production processes, various sensors are needed to monitor and control different parameters, ensuring that equipment operates in a normal or optimal state and that products achieve the highest possible quality.
Sensors are fundamental components in the field of automation and serve as the sensory foundation for intelligent manufacturing. From the perspective of product application directions in the global industrial sensor market, the primary areas of use include life sciences and health, mechanical processing and manufacturing, automotive, semiconductors and electronics, and industrial automation.
According to data from a report by MarketsandMarkets, the global industrial sensor market is projected to grow from US$20.6 billion in 2021 to US$31.9 billion in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.1%.
Domestic manufacturers are making vigorous efforts to catch up, accelerating the localization process of industrial sensors.
Over the past half-century and more, China’s industrial sensor industry has made certain progress in various aspects, including system development, scale expansion, product variety, basic technology research, and the integrated development of industry, academia, research, and application. It has essentially met the needs of the nation’s rapidly developing economy since the reform and opening-up policy was introduced.
However, the fundamental issues plaguing China’s industrial sensor industry—such as insufficient basic research, weak innovation capabilities, a shortage of core technologies, the inability of core component achievements to move beyond the laboratory, and a severe lack of domestic production of key components—have yet to be fundamentally addressed. Currently, China faces painful challenges such as an oversupply of low-end products and product homogenization. Therefore, the ability to develop and master core technologies and target the mid-to-high-end market is one of the key factors determining enterprises’ competitiveness.
In the future, the primary goal for China’s industrial sensors will be to achieve domestic production of core components, establish an integrated “industry-academia-research-application” ecosystem, and promote coordinated national development. This will involve strengthening the nation’s foundational sensor industry chain and simultaneously cultivating high-caliber, cutting-edge talent needed by the industry.
As intelligent manufacturing accelerates, the market demand for smart sensing, monitoring, production, and surveillance systems, as well as related technologies and equipment, is expected to continue rising. In response to the upgrading of new infrastructure and next-generation information technology industries, we will adopt a demand-driven approach to boost the application of sensors, thereby fostering a virtuous cycle of iterative development and R&D, and progressively addressing and filling the gaps in industrial sensor capabilities.
Replacing imported industrial sensors with domestically produced ones is a long and arduous journey—but we firmly believe that China will always be able to create miracles!
